Wheatsheaf Inn at Brigsteer opens again under new management

A VILLAGE pub has reopened with new owners and managers after a refurbishment.
The Wheatsheaf Inn at Brigsteer, near Kendal, shut overnight in March, 2012, raising fears of a loss of amenities to the village. But it has since been acquired by Individual Inns, which already owns the Mason’s Arms at Strawberry Bank, Cartmell Fell.
The Wheatsheaf Inn is now being run by Nicki Higgs, in charge of front of house, and chef Tom Roberts.
The couple are life as well as business partners and are engaged to be married. They met aged just 16 working in a pub at Beachy Head in the South Downs. Now still only 28, they have spent the last 12 years working their way up in the pub trade. They came to the Lake District two years ago to work at the Pheasant Inn, near Bassenthwaite, where Nicki was deputy manger and Tom chef in the Bistro.
Nicki said: “We had been looking for an opportunity to run our own business. And this is a dream come true – a pub that has been shut down, being reopened with a fantastic opportunity to build it up and be part of the community.”
