THOUSANDS of school children are expected to be off school today (Thursday) as Cumbrian teachers join in a national strike over changes to pay, pensions and working conditions.
The one-day strike has been called by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), who together represent about 90 per cent of teachers.
Cumbrian teachers are being joined by union members from the North East, London, South East and South West as part of the continued row.
Headteachers were given the decision on whether the school can ‘operate safely and effectively’ before deciding to close, a Cumbria County Council spokesman said.
