A CUMBRIA museum will be hosting a conference on the Crosby Garrett Roman Parade Helmet.

Tullie House, in Carlisle, in association with Centre of North Western Studies of the University of Lancaster, the Senhouse Museum and the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological society will host the conference this Saturday (November 9).

It has been extremely popular, attracting over 100 visitors and is now fully booked.

The day will provide an overview to the discovery and restoration of the helmet.

There are talks by specialists such as Dr Mike Bishop – editor of Roman Military Equipment Studies and Jon Coulson – lecturer in Ancient History and Archaeology at University of St Andrews.

Dr Mike Bishop said: “The Crosby Garrett Helmet conference and the accompanying book attempt to give some background to a breath-taking artefact.

“Not only do we describe the helmet in detail and tell the story of its discovery, but we also reveal new archaeological information about the site where it was found for the first time.

“Finally, we examine the role of such helmets in the elaborate spectacles regularly mounted by Roman cavalry.”
