The Apples and Orchards of Cumbria by Andy Gilchrist, £9, ISBN 9-781904-524557

In this very colourful book, the Kendal author sets out to describe the apple varieties which originated in the region now known as Cumbria, and the gardens and/or orchards open to the public where those and other varieties may be seen and enjoyed.

Mr Gilchrist demonstrates that the county should not be forgotten when it comes to the fruit, and reminds us of some local place names – Appleby, Applethwaite, Plumgarth.

The books is clearly laid out with illustrations and descriptions of many types of apples, from the Carlisle Codlin to Greenup’s Pippin, before looking at the places apples can be found, from Levens Hall to Sizergh Castle.

Other fruit are not forgotten, and there is a small section at the back of the book dedicated to the likes of local damsons and pears.
