Met Office warns of 90 mph winds in Cumbria over the next few days

GUSTS of up to 90 mph are predicted in Cumbria in the run-up to Christmas.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather alert for the North West, with risk of flooding throughout the area.

An area of low pressure is predicted to bring very strong winds and heavy rain to much of the UK from Monday morning, through to Christmas Eve.

The office has also predicted widespread gales with gusts of 70 mph for the North West of England.

Gusts of 90 mph are possible, with the public warned there will be the potential for significant disruption to travel due to the severity of the weather.

Whilst I have every sympathy with the Met Office after the Michael Fish debacle, they do seem to go a little over the top with their weather warnings sometimes. The problem is that it can have a serious affect on businesses because people decide to stay at home as advised, and rarely is the weather as bad as the forecast suggests. I assume the 90 mph gusts will be on the fell tops, not at lake level, but it's still the headline that is put out by the press, and that puts people off coming to the area.

Damned if they do and damned if they don't I suppose.
