HOME-OWNERS in Cumbria are being urged to check their smoke alarms over the festive period.

Statistics show you are four times more likely to die in a house fire if your home doesn’t have a working smoke alarm. As well as having a smoke alarm installed, it needs to be regularly tested and flat batteries replaced.

Cumbria’s assistant chief fire officer Adrian Buckle, said: “In properties with smoke alarms, the inhabitants have a much greater chance of escaping injury or death in the event of a fire breaking out.

“Having at least one smoke alarm in your home is vitally important although it is useless if it’s not working. I’d call on people across the county to make sure they have a fully functioning alarm before settling back and enjoying the festivities.

“A working smoke alarm in your home could be the best present you give your friends and family this Christmas.”
