A KENDAL woman was presented with an award honouring 50 years of service to Girlguiding.

Valerie Ellis began her Guiding career in 1963 at Heversham Guides and later worked with the Milnthorpe and Cumwhinton (Carlisle) units.

After moving back to Kendal, Ms Ellis spent 16 years running the YWCA Guide unit and, for the past 11 years, has helped at and run the Brownie units at the town’s YWCA and St Thomas’ Parish Church.

Ms Ellis gained her camper’s licence in 1974, and has helped with and run camps as far afield as Switzerland in 1975 and Belgium in 1977.

She said the most memorable occasion in her Guiding career was meeting and shaking hands with Lady Olave Baden Powell when she came to the former Longlands School, Kendal, in the late 1960s.

She was presented with the award by county commissioner Barbara Littlewood at St Thomas’ Church on Stricklandgate.
