SECURITY standards at the hospitals across the Morecambe Bay area have been praised by inspectors.

Standards at Westmorland General Hospital,Kendal, Royal Lancaster Infirmary, and Furness General Hospital, Barrow, were awarded ‘green’ status after being checked for 31 criteria.

Dan Willis, local security management specialist, said: “It is gratifying to know we are on the right track when trying to protect our staff, patients and visitors. We have been working with our colleagues at NHS Protect, and with our local police, to ensure that where possible we are providing a safe environment.

“This is a really good baseline, and we will now draw up an action plan to ensure that where we can improve the safety and security of our sites, we do so.”

Mary Aubrey, director of governance for the trust, said: “We are keen to ensure that the safety of our patients, staff and visitors remains a priority for us as a trust.

“We will continue our work to ensure that security continues to be high in everyone’s thoughts. This is something we need to do in partnership with the public and our staff and we need to send a clear message that we will not tolerate anything which endangers anyone on our premises.”
