MOUNTAIN rescuers have reminded fell walkers that a mobile phone is no substitute for a map and compass.
A lone walker got lost in the hills between Langdale and Grasmere and only had a photo of a map from a book stored on his phone.
Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team were out for three hours on Saturday December 28 and said it had proved 'very difficult' to locate the missing walker.
They said: "With some guidance by phone he was able to find a way down to Grasmere before it went dark. This was a little unfortunate, because he'd parked his car in Langdale.
"A smartphone, a the torch and a photo of a map from a book stored on the same phone don't constitute adequate navigation equipment."
