THE coastal road at Ulverston which collapsed during the bad weather has now re-opened to motorists.

The A5087, which runs between Ulverston and Barrow, was re-opened last night after several days of being shut in both directions between Lund Road and Leece Lane.

It was closed because of subsidence caused by a tidal surge on Friday.

"We're still assessing the cost of the damage," said a spokesman for Cumbria County Council, which is responsible for the road.

"But the road is now open."

The busy road was shut to all traffic and motorists were diverted via the A590.

However, work is still ongoing on the footpath behind the sea wall.

"We're repairing the footway and this will take at least until the end of this week," added the spokesman.

Flood warnings and alerts for the coastline have now been removed by the Environment Agency, although some remain in place for Cumbria's rivers and lakes.

"Due to continued rainfall river and lake levels remain high," said an agency spokesman.

"Further rainfall is forecast for this evening and overnight which may cause levels to rise again.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation."

High tides and strong winds combined over the last week to cause havoc across the county, with roads and businesses in Sandside, Arnside and Ulverston badly affected.

Owners of the Ship Inn at Sandside are now counting the cost of the deluge, but say closing for two days to clean up after the flooding will have cost them 'thousands'.

Rail services were also disrupted when Kirkby-in-Furness train station become submerged.

However the extreme weather seems to have receded and the coming days are expected to be cloudy with only patches of rain.

Wind speeds will not rise above 15mph, says the Met Office.
