Three injured in collision after getting stuck in snow at Kirkstone Pass

THREE people were injured yesterday in a two vehicle road traffic collision after getting stuck in the snow at Kirkstone Pass.

Team members from Langdale and Ambleside (LAMRT) and Patterdale mountain rescue teams were called to assist paramedics, whose ambulance had also become stuck.

One person was evacuated with back injuries using a LAMRT stretcher, and there were two walking wounded.

Around ten other stranded motorists were evacuated from the road as it was blocked by the snow and crashed vehicles.

LAMRT said: “It would be fair to say that the road was not in any condition to be used before the collision occurred."

There always has to be those who know best when it comes to driving in snow. Hope they all get a nice bill for their stupidity in trying to prove high passes are not closed.

Hmmm you always get those individuals who pass comment on an incident without knowing the true facts. Myself and my family were 4 of the 10 stranded motorists. I can assure you the road was NOT closed at the time of the accident. We are not from these parts and have never traveled across Kirkstone Pass before. A thick fog, and snow blizzard conditions quickly descended upon us, and of course due to lack of signal and internet we had no prior warning. The ambulance service and the mountain rescue team did a tremendous job in getting us all to safety. And should be applauded. Let's hope and pray the injured parties make a full recovery.

And as for 'a nice bill' we were in fact hit by the ambulance and will not be pursuing any insurance claim. They deal with incidents such as these on a daily basis and provide an incredible service.

Thank you

Ok but maybe you will take notice of the bbc and local weather forecasts in future. Both warned of snow on high ground.

And exactly how do we do that when we do not live in the Lakes, and we are travelling many miles to my brothers wedding, with no signal, no internet and no radio stations? The only way this incident could have been avoided was if the road had been closed!

I can assure you we are very sensible people!!! Grrr!

I recommend the 5-day forecast on this website and the Travel warnings below it. I saw that the pass was closed, as was Hardknott and Corney Fell. Never forget the Wezzy Gazette!

Id never heard of this website until after our accident. I googled the incident to see if there was any news on the injured and then came across this site. I felt compelled to register and comment as it seems to me that tourists are all tarred with the same brush on here.
For the third time , the ROAD WAS NOT CLOSED until AFTER 2 RTA's had taken place (we were the 2nd).
