A CONISTON filmmaker has raised £15,000 through ‘crowdfunding’ to complete a film about her mother’s stroke.

Karen Guthrie and fellow film producer Nina Pope set up a campaign through website Indiegogo to support her documentary ‘The Closer We Get’.

The 40-day campaign ended on January 16 at £15,065, with 321 funders from as far afield as the USA and Hungary.

The filmmakers will use the funding to complete the editing of the film and to produce a website about it.

Shot over several years, ‘The Closer We Get’ is an intimate portrait of Karen’s family adapting after her mother Ann suffers a devastating stroke.

Karen said: “I was very moved by all the messages of support coming in from others with experience of stroke, or of caring for older people.

“These mean as much to us as the funding, as they demonstrate that the issues in the film touch so many and that there is a huge audience for the film when we finish it.

“I know that with Christmas falling in the campaign period, some backers struggled to find the spare cash to donate so it means a great deal to us that they did.”

Karen and Nina will now return to editing the film and submit it to film festivals for a premiere this year, before later releasing it online and on DVD. Contributions can still be made by contacting the filmmakers at www.somewhere.org.uk/contact/.
