A STYLE-savvy student from Ulverston has fulfilled a lifetime dream by working backstage at the illustrious London Fashion Week.

The event, which brought the elite of the fashion world to the capital, showcases the work of the industry’s top fashion designers.

Lydia Rose Smyth, a former pupil of Ulverston Victoria High School, described the experience as ‘the best couple of days of my life’.

The 19-year-old, who has been writing her own make-up and fashion blog ‘Lydia Rose’ for the past six months, applied to do work experience with leading blogger Fashion Scout after spotting the opportunity on Twitter.

She said: “I think more than 100 people applied to do the internship so to get to do work experience at London Fashion Week was really hard – almost impossible. I never for a moment thought I would ever get the opportunity.”

Lydia, who is studying English Literature at the University of Warwick, is also a blogger for the Cumbria Live website.

Fashion Scout is one of the UK’s largest fashion showcases for emerging and established design talent and the team had Lydia working to a strict deadline to make sure they were the first to deliver news from the latest catwalk shows.

“It was really stressful and quite daunting. I had only done a bit of work experience at a couple of local newspapers before, and of course I write my blog, but it was still scary. It was just me standing there with my notepad thinking ‘oh there’s Daisy Lowe, I need to go interview her!’” said Lydia.

The main highlight for the ambitious student was to report from well-established designer Pam Hogg’s catwalk show.

She said: “I had to interview the celebs on the front row, so there was Daisy Lowe who was lovely, Amy Willerton and Ashley Roberts from the Pussycat Dolls so that was exciting.”

Lydia has ambitions to be a fashion journalist and started writing her blog in the hope of securing a job in the competitive business.

She added: “I would love to work for the magazine Company. I think as a magazine it speaks to me and people my age so that is my next big goal.”
