WESTMORLAND MP Tim Farron has called for more local flood defence schemes in South Lakeland.

The MP wants more cash for schemes in Kendal and Arnside to help protect residents.

He has met with floods minister and fellow Lib Dem, Dan Rogerson MP, to press the case.

Mr Farron raised concerns about the issue in the House of Commons which led to the meeting.

Just last month, Mr Farron said he was able to secure more than £2m for flood prevention projects around the county.

It will be used for flood defences in the Workington, Ulverston and Threlkeld areas. There will also be restoration work on the rivers Kent, Derwent and Eden.

At the meeting yesterday, the Minister said that he would look at specific schemes and raise them with officials in his department, said Mr Farron.

"Residents and businesses need certainty and we need to make sure that communities are protected. The recent bad weather showed that more funding must be spent on flood defences.

"I'm pressing the Government to look at all the local schemes and I hope that meeting the minister will help push our campaign forward.”
