Fuel project sheds light on wildlife at Arnside

The Westmorland Gazette: The Woodland Trust The Woodland Trust

WILDLIFE is thriving in Arnside thanks to a project helping people to source their own woodfuel.

Tree coppicing works in the Woodland Trust-owned Dobshall Wood has resulted in more light reaching the woodland floor.

This is encouraging important plant species to grow and is also providing food for rare butterflies.

Some of the timber is left as piles on the woodland floor to provide important deadwood habitat, and some is being taken by the volunteers to use as sustainably sourced fuel for their homes.

Colin Riley, Woodland trust site manager, said: “This is a great example of how communities can get involved in managing their woods and find benefits for themselves and for wildlife at the same time.”
