REVISED plans for an overhaul of Ferry Nab, Bowness, were submitted to the Lake District National Park Authority yesterday (Wednesday).

South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) has spent months working on new proposals for the area after national park planners gave the first scheme the thumbs down.

“The aim remains that the development will be sustainable and will bring significant environmental benefits,” said a spokesman for the council.

“It will bring benefits for lake users as well as encouraging people to leave their vehicles behind so they can take part in active and healthy pursuits, like exploring the lake and its surrounding area on foot, by bike or public transport.

“This meets some of the council’s key priorities around promoting health and well-being, supporting the economy and protecting the environment.”

The original plans – submitted last summer – included longer jetties, more boat storage, more car parking and a building with a cafe. But LDNPA planners told SLDC to think again.

Now the project has been split into two phases and the first phase – solely to extend the length of the jetties - will be resubmitted first.

The second phase, including improved onshore facilities, will follow at a later date.
