STUDENTS from Broughton-in-Furness CE Primary School are now ‘star’ pupils thanks to BAE Systems Ambassadors.

The school is one of the first in the country to have its pupils achieve CREST Star Awards for taking part in science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) projects at an afterschool club set up by BAE Systems engineers.

The group of 15 youngsters, aged between seven and ten, have attended the club set up by BAE Systems engineer, Dan Wiper, on Tuesday evenings since November last year.

Supported by one of his engineering colleagues, Andy Smith, Dan tries to spark the children’s love of STEM by providing interactive demonstrations followed by a host of hands-on experiments for the children to take part in.

He said: “We have done a wide variety of experiments - from making rockets and invisible ink, to making music from glass bottles – that all aim to explain the simple principles that sit behind science and technology.”

Headteacher Jacki Graham-Kevan said: “At Broughton we have always encouraged our budding engineers, scientists and mathematicians.

“This was a really exciting opportunity to nurture a sense of awe and wonder in our children and wow, have they risen to the challenge!
