DRIVERS are being warned of the potential for major congestion in Kendal tonight and Tuesday night.

The Highways Agency is diverting all northbound M6 traffic off at Junction 36 and directing it to rejoin the motorway at Junction 39.

It is to steer motorists away from major bridge repairs taking place on the section of the northbound M6 between J37 Sedbergh and J38 Tebay.

The diversions come into effect from 8pm until 6am tonight and on Tuesday.

But there are concerns that despite it happening outside of the main commuter hours, the Longpool area could become further snarled up due to the ongoing bridge works by Network Rail.

Cumbria County Council, which is not involved in the works, have warned the Longpool area could prove a 'pinch point' for motorists.

Work on the A591 starts last Thursday, which means one lane in either direction between Shenstone interchange and Prizet garages will be closed until Friday April 4.

A county council spokesman said: "We do not anticipate the lane closure needed for the resurfacing work on the A591 will cause any major issues given the time of night.

"But the need to divert all northbound M6 traffic through Kendal at a time when the A6 is reduced to a single lane is likely to cause major congestion in the evening and potentially overnight too.

MORE TOP STORIES:

"As the local highways authority, we can only try and minimise any anticipated disruption and the key thing we have asked the contractor at Longpool bridge to do is to man traffic signals overnight rather than leave an automated system in operation so they can ease the flow of vehicles as effectively as possible. All of the agencies involved in this work apologise in advance for any disruption.”

why not make the route under the bridge at Longpool one way and divert the shap traffic through sandylands and down anne street, then the lights could be left on green all night.

This could be epic. Whilst it will in no way affect me, it it is obviously going to affect many.

Do these people (Highways Agency/CCC et al) not talk to one another when planning such things?

The work at Longpool has long been scheduled as has the work to the motorway bridge no doubt, surely a due diligence report would flag up other goings on in the vicintity and surely one could/should be allowed to finish before the other begins - unless not having the work done on the M6 bridge is putting life at risk?

Is it too late to get the M6 work stopped Mr Farron? - This could be one of your more useful campaigns

Absolutely barmy, the bridge work isn't going to last much longer, couldn't they have waited? All the time the bridge work has been ongoing I've had my fingers crossed that the motorway doesn't get closed due an accident, then the idiots close it on purpose! nickjohn has a good idea but lorries can't go that way, they're trapped by two low bridges on Sedbergh Road and Parkside Road.. And as for dannyboy321's suggestion, that's what they will do, they always send it over the bypass when the motorway is closed. I'm retired now but I pity my old oppos on the Lakeland Limited lorry based at Shap Road Industrial Estate!

It will be like the 'Good Old Days' before the M6 and bypass were built. Good job vehicles now use lead free petrol or there would be many people with respiratory problems next week. Have the authorities factored in the risks to peoples health from the extra fumes? I left London because after an hour or so I could not stand the poor air quality so will be giving Kendal a wide berth next week also.

Let's create a bottleneck at one end of the town, then do the same at the other end of town. Then let's divert all the motorway traffic through the town, via both bottlenecks.
Great planning.
