A DANGER sign warning people not to jump from a South Lakeland bridge has been stolen by vandals.

The sign, put up by South Lakeland District Council, following the death of a young man in 2012, was fixed to a bollard at Devil's Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale.

The sign, one of two on each approach to the bridge, warns of the dangers of jumping into the River Lune and states the penalties which can be imposed on anyone caught breaking by-laws by jumping.

Kirkby Town Council chairman Allan Muirhead said: “Why anyone would go to the trouble of undoing six supposedly vandal-proof screws to remove the sign is beyond belief. The signs were put up to warn anyone tempted to jump that they were putting themselves at risk.

“There have been numerous accidents over the years, sadly with at least one fatality. The signs are there as a deterrent. It's just mindless stupidity.”
