A COUPLE who met as teenagers through a mutual friend will celebrate their Golden Wedding tomorrow (Friday).

Alan and Wendy Brown, both 74, of Scafell Drive, Kendal, will mark the milestone at a number of ‘surprise’ events organised by their family.

The couple were married at St Mark’s Church, Natland, on April 4, 1964.

Born at Boar Bank, Thorney Hills, Alan attended St Mark’s School, Natland, and Kendal Grammar School.

Wendy was educated at Kirkland and Castle Street Schools before going on to Kendal High School – both then attended Allen Technical College, Kendal.

Alan was an apprentice joiner at WH Ainsworths before going on to own his own joinery and double glazing business, while Wendy worked for several local companies, mainly in secretarial work.

They have children, Alastair, Peter and Kathryn and are grandparents to Ursula, 15, Kim, 11, James, 7 and Abigail, 5.

The couple have enjoyed sailing for many years and spent a lot of time on the water in Scotland.

Alan is a member of Kentside Probus Club and Wendy’s pastimes include needlework, knitting and cooking as well as being a member of the WI. Both share a love of gardening.

The couple say their recipe for a long and happy marriage is ‘a loving bond that keeps our family together and endures through the ups and downs of life’.
