A MOUNTAIN biker suffering from hypothermia was airlifted to hospital from a Lake District fell.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were called to assist the biker on Dollywaggon Pike yesterday (April 12) at about 2.45pm.

The team, which was training with an RAF Sea King helicopter from Boulmer at the time of the call, and were able to respond immediately.

Due to low cloud the RAF helicopter was initially limited to taking some team members as far as Grisedale tarn while others made their way on foot.

But a window of clear weather allowed the helicopter to reach the biker who was assessed and then flown to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

Sixteen Patterdale MRT members, two Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team members and two RAF Mountain Rescue Team members took part in the three hour rescue.
