A PENSIONER was airlifted to hospital from a Lake District fell with a suspected broken ankle.
The 75-year-old woman injured herself between Mosedale Cottage and Swindale Head on the Shap Fells just before 2.20pm.
Penrith Mountain Rescue Team was called to assist the casualty on Wednsday (April 30) but an RAF Sea King helicopter was on hand first and airlifted her to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
The multi-organisation rescue took three-and-a-half hours and involved 11 Penrith Mountain Rescue Team members and ten from Kirkby Stephen Mountain rescue Team.
Penrith MRT Deputy Team Leader, Pete King, said: “The support of the RAF helicopter saved the team a reasonably long carry out and we were able to ensure that the rest of the walking group returned safely to their transport.”
