AN AMBLESIDE-based university professor has been invited to speak at this month’s inaugural World Cities Summit (WCS) in Singapore.
Professor Jem Bendell, from the University of Cumbria, has been recognised as a ‘Young Leader’ by the WCS - even though he lives and works in the heart of the rural Lake District.
His appointment is in recognition of his leading work on the ‘sharing economy’ and comple-mentary currencies, which are seen as increasingly relevant for cities worldwide.
“The village spirit we see in the heart of the Lake District, where people still lend stuff to each other rather than buying it, is now growing in cities as well with the help of technology,” said Prof Bendell, who is the director of the Institute for Leadership and Sustainability at the university.
“That means we can have a higher quality of life with less resources.”
The Young Leaders are selected once every two years with each serving a three year tenure.
Prof Bendell is already a ‘Young Global Leader’ with the World Economic Forum.
