KENDAL College has been chosen among an elite group of outstanding colleges to deliver a graduate placement scheme for teachers.

The college will welcome the first crop of graduates for the national pilot programme this September.

‘Premium Graduate Initial Teacher Training’ is primarily aimed at graduates of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic) and there are five places on offer.

“It is quite a coup which will up the standards of teaching and will also bring high-quality graduates into the area,” said head of the teaching education department Richard Evans.

Kendal College was selected alongside Runshaw College and Blackburn College to offer the placements with accelerated teacher training.

It means the graduates will teach on site as well as being mentored and tutored by specialists.

“It is aimed at graduates who want to get into teaching or those with more specialist experience but who want to try their hand at teaching,” added Mr Evans.

With the college’s new Engineering Centre due to open in September, graduates will also have the unique opportunity to experience a modern work environment with new technologies and equipment.

Mr Evans said there are three similar schemes set to begin around the country.

“The pilot will then be reviewed and hopefully it will be rolled it out nationwide,” he said.
