Lancaster Canal restoration gets Heritage Lottery Fund boost

The Westmorland Gazette: Canal cash welcomed Canal cash welcomed

A PROJECT to preserve a part of Kendal’s history has been given a vital cash boost. The Heritage Lottery Fund has gifted £6,900 towards maintaining the Lancaster Canal, which was instrumental in providing trade links for Kendal and Lancaster.

Some of the ‘Catalyst Grant’ will be used to take a survey to assess people’s attitudes towards the canal and find out what activities they want to take place there.

Claire Chapman, grants officer of the Lancaster Canal Trust, who spearheaded the application, said: "The Lancaster Canal is part of daily life for many people, as they use it to walk their dog or travel to work. The canal itself is over 200 years old though, and needs a lot of tender loving care, in particular the northern sections of the canal which boats can't access anymore.

"This funding will help the Lancaster Canal Trust find out how local people would like to get involved in looking after the canal, and ensure that it’s still here for our great grandchildren to walk their dogs along too!"

Keith Tassart, work party supervisor, said: "This makes all the hard graft by my volunteers who have turned out all winter, wet or fine, worthwhile." For more information on how to get involved with the Lancaster Canal Trust visit
