NEW guidelines for the 30,000 participants in the Three Peaks Challenge have been introduced.

The Wasdale Visitor Management Partnership has brought in the guidelines to help the community of the remote Lake District valley cope with past issues including noise, littering, using the village green as a toilet, people being disturbed late at night by people asking directions and irresponsible parking in driveways and lanes.

The measures introduced this year include dedicated minibus bays and 24-hour parking at Lake Head, and temporary toilets and catering for participants.

The Three Peaks Challenge involves participants climbing the highest mountains of Scotland, England and Wales — Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon — within 24 hours.

It is frequently undertaken as a fundraising event for charities, with walkers climbing each peak in turn and a driver ferrying them from one mountain to the next Visitor Management Officer Sarah Medcalf said: “The Three Peaks is a high-profile challenge, both for those taking part and for the people who live and work in this spectacular natural environment. “We want everyone to enjoy the experience, so we’re asking organisers and participants to think ahead about parking, toilets and using a route that doesn’t add to the erosion on Scafell Pike.”
