IN its first venture outside of Kendal, The Lakeland Climbing Centre has opened a new state-of-the art indoor climbing wall in London.
The centre – VauxWall – is located under Vauxhall Station’s railway arches and was unveiled earlier this month.
The £500,000 construction offers bouldering, which means users can climb on low walls without ropes.
A spokesperson at the centre says that VauxWall has ‘set a new standard for indoor bouldering in the UK’ with its high-quality climbing surfaces and high specification fittings including electronic registration and check-in systems, dust extraction and air conditioning.
The move is the first venture away from The Lakeland Climbing Centre’s headquarters at Kendal and the management team led by local businessman, Jeremy Wilson, is already looking for the next opportunity outside the Lakes.
The new centre’s ethos is “to encourage climbers to visit the Lake District - the birthplace of British rock climbing.”
Tom Hull, a key member of The Lakeland Climbing Centre’s team in Kendal, supervised the VauxWall build and is manager.
He said that he is ready to give a warm welcome to any climbers from South Cumbria when they visit London.
