A limited edition ‘JS Berlin Legend’ Patrick Eggle electric guitar made for Irish blues and rock legend Rory Gallagher sold at auction in South Lakeland for £29,500 (including buyer’s premium).

Manager Kevin Kendal, from Eighteen Eighteen Auctioneers near Milnthorpe who sold the guitar, said he believed it was the first Rory Gallagher guitar up for sale through a public auction.

Attracting telephone and live on-line bids, the guitar made nearly double its estimate; a record price for a guitar sold by the auction room. It was bought by Irish entrepreneur Peter Drayne, a director of MITA Records, who said he was keen to see the guitar used, and not put in a glass case on an office wall somewhere.

“These things need to be preserved, but they also need to be played” said Mr Drayne.
