A 14-YEAR-OLD girl was airlifted to hospital after dislocating her kneecap while walking on the Scafell range.

The teenager was with a school group at Calf Cove above Esk Hause when she suffered the injury and was unable to continue.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 5.35pm on Thursday and was joined by an RAF Sea King helicopter in the rescue.

A team spokesperson said: “As the group was high on the hill and at risk from hypothermia, the team mobilised a large number of members and made their way up to the location.

“The North West Ambulance service requested an RAF Sea King to attend, though this had to land on some distance away because of low cloud at the incident site.

“The young lady was splinted and given analgesia, and then carried about 400m to the waiting helicopter."

She was flown to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

The four hour rescue involved 25 volunteer members of the team.
