UPDATE: Driver, 23, recalls moment plank of wood flew towards his windscreen

The Westmorland Gazette: Kendal's Windermere Road blocked following two vehicle collision Kendal's Windermere Road blocked following two vehicle collision

A DRIVER has described the moment he saw a plank of wood flying towards his windscreen in a crash with left him hospitalised.

Harry Baker said a rope snapped on a builder's van and a piece of scaffolding plank broke free - which headed straight for his Ford Ka.

The 23-year-old was forced to pull off an emergency stop as he was driving home to London yesterday (Wednesday).

He decided to stop in Kendal after visiting family in the north Lakes.

The wood smashed into his windscreen leading to a series of serious injuries, he said.

The driver of the van stopped to help, added Mr Baker.

Speaking to the Gazette on a train to the capital, Mr Baker said: "Seeing the plank flying towards me was like something out of Final Destination.

"I have a twisted knee, whiplash and back pain.

"The emergency services were very helpful."
