Crowds pop out for Cuckoo Festival
HUNDREDS flocked to the 33rd Austwick Cuckoo Festival and Street Market on Bank Holiday Monday.
Visitors and villagers turned out for the food and drink stalls, arts and crafts by the Women’s Institute, music, entertainment and the annual fell race.
Austwick Street Market Committee member Zoe Miller said: “It was a great day and the weather was on our side. We got quite a lot of donations for stalls from the community, who all pulled together.”
She added that the festival’s ‘main attraction’ was the Austwick Amble Fell Race, which saw Staveley’s Kieran Hodgson, of Helm Hill Runners, make it first to the finish line.
He completed the challenging eight-mile course, with 1,200 ft of ascent, in 51 minutes 26 seconds. There were 160 competitors and the junior races were also well supported.
There was also entertainment from Yorkshireman Zoot, live bands and a bouncy castle for children.
All money raised on the day will go towards the Austwick Parish and Jubilee Playing Fields.
