A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital after injuring her ankle on a Lake District yesterday (May 31).

The 18-year-old was walking with a group on the Styhead to Seathwaite path when she turned her ankle 'badly'.

Members of the group tried to carry her down but were overtaken with darkness.

Kewsick Mountain Rescue Team were called at 9.43pm after taking part in the recovery of a body in the search for missing pensioner Richard Hayne.

The fifteen members plus four members from Penrith Mountain Rescue Team stretchered the casualty to Seathwaite where she was met by the North West Air Ambulance Service who airlifted her to the Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle.

The rescue took just over two-and-a-half hours.
