THE world’s longest surviving book club has celebrated its 250th anniversary with a special party.

Dalton Book Club was founded in 1764 by 17 men and its history has attracted attention from Australia and the US.

Celebrations were attended by The Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria Claire Hensman and husband Peter, alongside the Mayor of Dalton Daniel Greaves and mayoress Julia Greaves.

The private club meets monthly to discuss old and new books. Club members and guests toured Dalton Castle and also conducted a short meeting at The White Horse Inn, where the first meeting was held.

There was a meal at Clarence House with a special cake bearing the names of members.
