VILLAGERS are planning a charity bike ride to raise money for their village hall roof.

Urswick Recreation Hall is in desperate need of new slates and fund-raisers have already made huge strides towards the £16,000 needed.

Riders will set off from the award-winning General Burgoyne pub and ride to the nearby Derby Arms, The Wellington Inn at Loppergarth and the Miners Arms at Swarthmoor.

It is the fourth time the charity ride has been held – but the first time funds will go to a purely local charity.

Burgoyne landlord Craig Sherrington said: "It's great to be involved in organising the ride this year. I've been on it a few times and there's a real sense of community spirit.

"The recreation hall is a great local facility so it seems fitting that this year's ride will be raise money for it."

The bike ride will run from 2pm on Saturday, August 23, with every penny of the £8 entrance fee going to the charity.

Anyone who takes part can enjoy a free barbecue at the Burgoyne.
