A WEEK of cultural events in Kirkby Lonsdale has begun today with the town's historic annual brass band competition.

Eight bands took part in the 2014 Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Contest, in which 11 trophies were up for grabs.

Top prize - the Simmy Hartley Trophy - went to Pilling Jubilee Silver Band while the best junior band trophy went to Barrow Shipyard Junior Band.

Pilling's Len Charnock was awarded the E V Greenwood Memorial Trophy as the winning conductor.

Music adjudicator was veteran band conductor Derek Broadbent, famous in the band world for arranging the version of the Floral Dance which Brighouse and Rastrick band topped the British pop charts in the 1970s.

At the end of the contest, a 'massed bands' concert was conducted by Mr Charnock.

Throughout the coming week in Kirkby Lonsdale there will be music concerts, arts exhibitions, art and craft workshops, children's events and theatrical performances.
