AN ELDERLY man ended up in a canal near Kendal after challenging three men over bags of fish they were carrying, said police.

At around 8.30am on Tuesday the man approached the men on the banks of the canal at Crooklands regarding two bags of fish they were carrying.

Police said the males were abusive and the elderly men ended up in the canal. His holdall was also stolen, they said.

The males were on foot and walked off towards Stainton along the canal.

Police described them as white. One was around 50-years-old, 5'8" tall with grey hair and the other two were 30-years-old, around 6' tall - both wearing beanie hats and one wearing a camouflaged jacket.

They were carrying the fish in dark plastic bags with no writing on.

If anyone has any information contact PC 1085 Kate Sutton on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I'd like to praise this man's courage in confronting probable poachers when outnumbered and not in reach of help. The crap jokes are flippant rubbish from people who would have done nothing.

I am a bit puzzled as to why this elderly man challenged two men with bags of fish. Were they his and, if so, what was he doing with two large bags of fish in any case? This seems to have been just an argument over some fish and, unsurprisingly, the more vulnerable man ended up in the canal. By all means people should intervene and 'have a go' if someone's life is in danger, but not over the ownership / theft of foodstuff. This man is not a hero, just rather silly, and he is lucky that the situation didn't turn out much worse for him. Best to pick your battles.

So basically, what you are saying is that he got what he deserved?

You don't know the facts, so no point in speculating. Maybe he was rash to confront the men, he didn't deserve to end up in the canal and have his own property stolen.

I wish there were more conscientious people like him in this world.
