A KENDAL man who featured in the popular BBC 2 series The Watermen met the Queen at a garden party on the Royal Lawns.

The monarch took time out to speak to John Butcher, 53, who was one of the main characters in the documentary series.

He was there with his son Ben, brother Tom and wife Helen, in honour of the work that United Utilities carries out in the north.

MORE TOP STORIES: “She was actually interested that we were helping life flow smoothly for people, ” said John. “It was a bit surreal and a bit of a whirlwind.

“If someone had said I was going to meet the Queen I’d never have believed it. I feel very honoured.”

The series, which hit a combined 43 million TV, social media and print viewers, was filmed over 12 months.

The cameras followed United Utilities teams as they worked to keep taps flowing for seven million customers across the north west.
