KENDAL and Ulverston are to host free Our Big Gig events next month as part of a national project bringing people from all backgrounds together.

The best local musicians will provide the entertainment for the event over the weekend July 11 to 13 – with Kendal’s Westmorland Shopping Centre transformed into the ultimate gig venue for one night only.

The event is free of charge and will feature live music, art exhibitions for the whole family and a free celebration for all in the evening.

Lana Johnson, community event organiser, said: “ We have a really strong team of volunteers who have given up lots of their time in order to make this event possible, so please show your support. Come and see the shopping centre transformed into the ultimate gig venue!”

A programme of rock, pop, blues and easy listening music will also be showcased on Market Street, Ulverston, on Saturday July 12, from 10am to 4pm.

It will feature pop and acoustic music with a variety of cultural influences such as Brazilian, Latino and Bollywood.

Stephen Williams MP, the Minister for Communities, has announced more than 150 free community events taking place across England as part of Our Big Gig – with a list of locations and line ups to be found at: www.superact.org.uk/ourbiggig/events/all-events

“Live music is a great way of getting people from all different backgrounds and from right across the country involved in their local community and have a weekend of free entertainment into the bargain,” he said.

“The weekend aims to help turn strangers and neighbours into friends and encourage lots of people to get involved in music, in some cases for the first time.”
