MORE than 80 young people from South Lakes will be taking part in National Citizen Service (NCS) this summer.

Three of the seven teams will set off on Monday June 30 for Ullswater Outward Bound Centre for the start of their three week NCS project with Inspira.

Aimed at 16 and 17 year olds, NCS is designed to give young people who are transitioning from school to further education, training or employment, the skills they need to be successful in the next phase of their life.

The latest NCS survey revealed that 92 per cent of the young people felt they had the chance to develop skills which will be useful to them in the future – while 98.5% would recommend NCS to other young people.

Brenda Reading, for Inspira, said: “It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all 16 and 17 year olds in the South Lakes. It’s a lot of fun and you learn new things and have fun with friends. A great way to spend the summer.”

The young people will also experience independent living – based at the University of Cumbria’s Ambleside campus the teams will cook for themselves, learn new skills and work with local businesses and organisations.

The teams will also find out about their local communities and identify some challenges which will form the basis for their community action plans.

“There are some places left on the programme,” says Brenda.

“Get in touch and we can tell you all about it.”

Start Dates: June 30, July 7, July 21 and August 4.
