THE clock was wound back on a South Lakeland seaside town on Saturday (June 22) as several hundred people gathered to celebrate bygone eras.

Arnside’s second Vintage On The Prom event saw men don their blazers and boaters and women their chignons and stilettos as classic cars, dress and dance descended on the town.

Organiser Jane Caldwell, who owns Posh Sardine, said: “There was a real buzz about the village and already locals have been in to say how much they enjoyed it.”

Started last year by Ms Caldwell, Liz McGonagle of The Little Shop and Charlotte Muir of Arnside House, the aim was to boost business and put Arnside on the map.

“We just wanted to dress up and thought it can be any era. We chose ‘40s and ‘50s and wore dresses with sticky out skirts,” added Ms Caldwell.

The whole community rallied together for the day with the pubs serving vintage-inspired menus, there was an open day at the Education Institute and a vintage fair at the Women’s Institute.

A couple were on hand to teach and perform swing dancing while singer Cindy Houghton entertained audiences with period songs against the backdrop of the picturesque promenade.

There was also a display of photos from the 1940s courtesy of Arnside Archive group, a children’s play area complete with vintage toys plus a horse and dray from Blackburn’s Thwaites Brewery.
