THE family of a missing Kendal man are being supported after a body was recovered from the sea off the coast of North Sutherland, Scotland.

The man was found in water near to Neave Island off the coast of Tongue on Tuesday afternoon.

The identity of the body has not yet been released however Cumbria Police have informed the family of 59-year-old Christopher Strange.

Mr Strange went missing from his home on Monday and was believed to have travelled to the Highlands.

A body was found around 60 miles west of John O'Groats.

A RNLI lifeboat from Thurso was part of the search operation when crew launched The Taylors from Scrabster Harbour at 11.50am.

One of those onboard told the Gazette the weather was calm and sunny.

He said the area was popular with tourists for its scenic views and beaches but was sparse in population.

β€œIt took us about an hour to get to the location at which point the body had been found and it was a recovery mission rather than a search and rescue,” he said.

A rescue helicopter from Shetland Coastguard was also involved in the search.
