A KENDAL woman will be putting her best foot forward to celebrate 80 years since the birth of the Friends of the Lake District group.

Jean Savage, a volunteer with the group, will be walking 80 miles from Ravenstonedale to Ravenglass, across land overseen by the landscape charity, including Little Asby Common, High Borrowdale, the Helm at Oxenholme and woodlands at Staveley, Ambleside and Eskdale.

The plucky walker, whose walking boots are ‘falling apart’, will begin her walk today and will complete a little bit more every day until July 15.

She will also carry all her belongings herself, with no support team, and will use public transport to get home each night.

She will be joined by friends on different stages of her walk.

“It’s going to be a stunning walk through all the Friends’ land, which is where they run all their volunteer conservation days,” she explained.

“The Friends have been doing a great job of working to protect the landscape for 80 years, so please do sponsor me to support their vital work.”

But Ms Savage is no stranger to long walks, having previously walked Offa’s Dyke, the Southern Upland Way, the Coast to Coast Cumbria Way, the Dales Way, the West Highland Way, Chamonix to Zermatt, and various routes in Nepal.
