A MAN begged to be taken into custody after being caught drink-driving for a third time, a court heard.

Paul Hewitt pleaded guilty to drink driving on the A591 at Alice Howe, Windermere, when he appeared at South Lakeland Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that he said when stopped and a roadside breath test revealed he was over the limit: “I did it deliberately, send me to jail.”

Magistrates were told his breath contained 70 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitre of breath – the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Hewitt, of Redruth Avenue, St Helens, already had two previous convictions for drink driving and had served a three year ban from 2010.

In mitigation Hojol Uddin claimed Hewitt deliberately committed the crime as ‘an act of desperation’ after reaching breaking point in his home life.

Magistrates banned him from driving for 40 months and fined him £850. He was also orderd to pay £85 in costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
