SOUTH Lakelanders are being encouraged to harness the inspiration of the Tour de France and get pedalling thanks to a partnership involving South Lakeland District Council.

South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) has joined with Cumbria County Council and the Go Lakes Travel Programme to bring six Sky Ride local bike rides and a ride leader training course for ten people to Kendal.

SLDC has put £3,000 towards the rides and training taken from a £29,000 grant from the Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs.

The partnership is part of the council’s Go Easy campaign, which is designed to encourage people to make changes to their daily travel routines for the good of the environment and themselves.

Sky Ride Local rides are free bike rides guided by British Cycling Ride Leaders along scenic planned routes. The rides take place in South Lakeland throughout the spring and summer. The rides vary in length and difficulty so they are designed to suit everybody from beginners to those looking for a stiffer challenge.

SLDC helped fund two rides on June 1 and June 15. A ride planned for July 14 was cancelled but it will fund a further four rides that will take place on: Sunday July 20 – Kendal to Sizergh Castle loop, 2pm, depart Corner of Gooseholme Park and Parish Church of St George, Gooseholme Park, Kendal Sunday August 24 - Kendal to Sizergh Castle loop, 11am, depart Corner of Gooseholme Park and Parish Church of St George, Gooseholme Park, Kendal
