HIGH street coffee giants Costa are planning an extension to their narrow premises in Kendal town centre.

The company has applied to South Lakeland District Council to take over a vacant shop at the rear.

The empty unit was formerly occupied by Ego Clothing in the Elephant Yard.

It had been on the market and offers 377sqft of extra space for Costa.

Costa has applied for change-of-use permission.

If they need to expand it just shows how many people are prepared to pay their inflated prices.

Or you could look at it as, Kendal finally has a unit that is expanding and not to be a charity shop! I hope it all goes through for them.

A fine contribution; it's great to see you're so enthusiastic about what is another positive retail story for our town.

If you think their prices are inflated, why not stay at home and enjoy a nice milky cup of Maxwell House instead?

There are many coffee shops in Kendal that are privately owned with equally good coffee, why not support those instead.

I often go to Finkles and The Joshua Tree but as a treat, I go to Costa (plus, I prefer the coffee there). When a privately owned shop expands, I'll support them aswel, but for now, good luck Costa.

Costa - a treat tictoc1? Sure you aren't getting mixed up - Costa is a bog standard, featureless, multinational, that charges high prices for basic coffee. Whereas The Joshua Tree is an independent with a better atmosphere and nicer coffee. I was in Kendal on Saturday morning and we were desperate to find a decent place for a cuppa and rest. The JT was't open, and we couldn't find anywhere else that looked clean and friendly with decent quality food and coffee. So we left Kendal and went to 2 Sisters at Plumgarths. Expanding Costa will just bring down the Elephant Yard area, which is very decent.

It's simple, a shop with custom will bring more to the town (financially and aesthetically) than an empty one, regardless of whether that shop is "featureless and multinational ".

Costa have obviously found Kendal to be a sucess as they are now planning on expanding their second shop in the relatively small town, so they must be doing something right.

If you don't like the concept or taste of Costa, don't shop there.

Joshua Tree closed? On a Saturday morning? At the height of the tourist season?

Perhaps this is just one of myriad reasons why Costa can afford to expand.
