OPEN days are to be held in Arnside for local people looking to find out more about becoming on-call firefighters.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) will be present in the town tomorrow (Tuesday) and again on August 2, giving out information to those looking to sign up to the service.

Around 25 firefighters are needed at 17 fire stations across the county - including Arnside.

Councillor Barry Doughty, who represents the fire service on Cumbria County Council, said: “On-call firefighters are a vital part of CFRS and are called upon to attend the full range of incidents including fires, floods, road traffic collisions, chemical spills and more, and work alongside their full-time colleagues at many incidents.

“I’d urge people in the areas we’re looking to recruit to consider applying to become part of the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service team."

The on-call firefighter posts are not volunteer roles. The pay scales for an on-call firefighter are:

• A retainer of £2,158 - £2,877 dependent on the cover provided

• An hourly rate of £13.14 when competent in the role

• An on-call firefighter can earn around £6,000 a year

For more information fire service representatives will be in Arnside between 10am and 1pm.
