FURNESS Abbey Fellowship has announced that they will be holding their second medieval fair at Furness Abbey near Barrow on Saturday August 30.

Running between 10am-5pm, the event is supported by donations by local businesses and fundraising by the fellowship.

Organisers says there will be lots of exciting activities including weapons demonstrations by the Iron Shepherds Living History group.

The Iron Shepherds will also demonstrate crafts and provide a glimpse into the life of people in the middle-ages-at the time when Furness Abbey was active.

Iain Mc Nichol, historical interpreter, will demonstrate the use of herbs and explain how these were used by monks.

Artist, Patrick Corbett reprises his 'scribe' role and will be creating illuminated letters and will be inviting the public to join in.

The Dorian Players will provide early Tudor music in the Chapter House in the afternoon and Dr Geraldine Green will read from her collection of poems, many inspired by the Furness peninsula.

Gill Jepson, chairperson of the fellowship, will preview a chapter from her new book The Cistercian Conspiracy' which is due to be released in November.

In addition, there will be a hog roast from Irvings of Ulverston, refreshments from Abbey Mill Cafe, craft stalls, including Wavy Grain and demonstrations by artisans such as Owen Jones, swill basket maker and stone mason William Todd.

There will also be a Gargoyle hunt and a Furness Abbey Fellowship stall.

English Heritage will be providing short talks explaining the current conservation work in the abbey and their range of preserves and wines will be available for tasting.

You can also take the opportunity to see the fabulous abbot’s Crosier and ring with its new case in its permanent home at Furness Abbey.

Last year over 1,200 visitors attended the fair.
