SHOPS in Furness have been praised after all nine premises visited in an undercover test purchase operation refused to sell alcohol to a 15-year-old volunteer.
Cumbria County Council’s Trading Standards and Cumbria police targeted retailers in Kirkby-in-Furness, Dalton-in-Furness and Barrow and all successfully challenged the under-age volunteer for proof of age identity before declining to sell alcohol.

Sheralee Cornthwaite South Area Manager for Cumbria Trading Standards Service, said: “It's encouraging that the retailers tested complied with their legal obligations. Our staff work closely with traders to ensure compliance with the law throughout the year and these undercover checks form a vital part of this work.
“Although this was an encouraging result I would remind all businesses that they should ask for identification that proves a person is 18 years or older, such as a passport, driving licence or proof of age card, before selling age-restricted products to young people."
John McIntosh, Community Sergeant for Barrow Police, said “The police are pleased to see that premises are taking their responsibilities seriously and no sales were made.”
