AN MP is to lobby for a tunnel for vehicles under Morecambe Bay which would create a link between Furness and Heysham.

Morecambe and Lunesdale MP David Morris has spoken in favour of an underwater link between Cumbria and Lancashire, saying National Grid is considering a similar project to carry electricity cables under the bay.

“There will be mutual benefits,” he said. “A tunnel would improve the economy here in Morecambe and Lunesdale, allowing people from places like Barrow easy access to day trip to Morecambe, and will give commuters better access to the other side of the bay, especially those who work at places such as BAE Systems in Barrow.”

But Amina Lone, Labour candidate for the Lunesdale area, has hit out at the idea.

“Whilst I welcome any attempt to alleviate the pressure on the roads in and around Morecambe, I cannot help but think that these grand ideas deflect attention away from the fact that our NHS is in crisis and our local hospital is under threat,” she said.
