THE head teacher of a school judged ‘good’ says she is glad Ofsted recognised its links with the outdoors as well as its academic achievements.

Joyce Hallam, head at Hawkshead Esthwaite Primary, was speaking after the education watchdog said the Lake District school was good with outstanding features.

The Main Street school was said to have outstanding “behaviour and safety of pupils” and “leadership and management”.

Mrs Hallam said: “There is a positive family atmosphere and everybody works hard to meet the needs of all individuals.

“We go for academic rigours but also work hard to do things in the environment.

“I am also pleased with the recognition for the school’s international links. In an area where there isn’t a lot of multiculturism it’s important to give children a bespoke 21st century curriculum.”

The report said: “The primary school sport funding is used to broaden sporting opportunities for pupils, while developing the expertise of staff using specialist coaches.

“This has, for example, led to the introduction of cricket, ghyll scrambling, multi-skills and dance offered to pupils.

“As a result, more pupils are taking part in a wider range of sporting activities to help them stay healthy and promote well-being.”
